Captain's Fishing Report: Panama Pacific, April 2026

Capitán Panama Gem Charters

As we approach the end of the dry season, the waters of the Panama Pacific offer one of the most consistent and rewarding fishing activities of the year.

Location: Taboga Island, Otoque Island (Bird Sanctuary) and the Pearl Islands Archipelago.

As we approach the end of the dry season, the waters of the Panama Pacific offer one of the most consistent and rewarding fishing activities of the year. Following the spring equinox on March 21, we've observed a notable and positive shift in feeding patterns. The stabilization of daylight hours and the equinox-aligned tides have triggered a significant increase in fishing activity, especially among coastal and bottom species.

Current activity: Bottom fishing at its peak

We are in the heart of the bottom-fishing high season. The rocky reefs and drop-offs around the Pearl Islands, Taboga and the underwater structures near the Otoque Bird Sanctuary are producing large catches.

  • Snapper: Cubera snapper is showing up in big numbers. We're seeing aggressive strikes on both live bait and heavy jigs.
  • Grouper: Big broomtail and snowy groupers remain steady in the deeper zones. Cooler bottom temperatures keep them active and hungry.
  • Target zones: The Pacheca drop and Santa Catalina reef in the Pearl Islands, along with the rugged north Pearls coastline, are currently the key spots for these monsters.

The seasonal transition: what's next?

As the season shifts from dry to wet, we begin to see the first signs of migratory pelagic species approaching the coast.

  • Yellowfin tuna: We're starting to spot the first schools in deeper water. Trolling near the drop-offs is already producing early catches.
  • Sailfish: Right behind the tuna, the majestic sailfish begin their northward migration. The coming weeks will be crucial for billfish enthusiasts.
  • Mahi-mahi: Very soon, as the sea moves closer to the islands and the first rains activate the rivers, we expect to see solid-sized dorado near floating debris.

Plan your fishing trip

It's the ideal time to book. The combination of calm seas, excellent bottom catches and the start of the pelagic season makes April one of the most complete months of the year.

Captain's tip

Head out early. The best hours are between sunrise and mid-morning, when fish are most active and the sea is calmest. Bring sun protection, plenty of hydration and lots of energy — the action doesn't stop!
