Panama is a world-class fishing destination. Naturally, there are many questions about fishing regulations and what you can do while you're here. Don't worry; we want to help you navigate all the details you should know before booking your fishing trip in Panama.

Do I need a fishing license to fish in Panama?

The short answer is no. As a tourist or resident, you do not need a personal fishing license for sport fishing. This means you won't need to apply for a permit when you arrive. Although the Panama Maritime Authority closely regulates the fishing industry, it is the vessels that must be registered and up to date with all documentation. Just remember to bring your ID with you on your fishing trip.

Turtles are protected

Turtles are protected in Panama and often use our beaches as nesting grounds. It is illegal to endanger, bait, fish for, or capture turtles in Panama. Heavy fines are imposed on anyone caught breaking the law in any way.

We do not kill billfish

Just so you know, these regulations exist to protect marine biodiversity. The law in Panama protects billfish and prohibits killing them. This includes blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, white marlin, spearfish, sailfish, and swordfish. You can still catch them, but we only practice “catch and release.”

No industrial operations

Panamanian law prohibits longliners over six tons from fishing in our waters. This protects native species and is a good indication that you will find more fish to catch during your deep sea fishing tour.

Fishing seasons in Panama

There are no seasonal regulations for catching most fish in Panama. And there is no limit to the number of fish you can catch. However, shrimp and lobster are protected during their breeding seasons to prevent overfishing. Shrimp season runs from February 1 to April 11 and from September 1 to October 11. Lobster season runs from March 1 to July 1.

Shark fishing

It is not very common to fish for sharks, although it is possible. However, the Panamanian maritime authority has begun monitoring fishermen who cut off the fin and throw the shark back into the ocean. There is still no law protecting sharks, but we recommend not taking part in the practice of killing sharks for their fins.

Spearfishing

There are no regulations or restrictions for this recreational activity. However, we recommend only trying it under the guidance of professionals.

Freshwater fishing

The only freshwater fishing in Panama is in Lago Gatún. It is an artificial lake that forms part of the Panama Canal. It is a magical place for fishing lovers, as there are no limits on what you can catch. In addition, you will see a variety of animals during your fishing trip, so try not to disturb their habitat.

Panama means an abundance of fish and butterflies.

Fishing is a popular local sport, and Panama is a world-class destination for professional anglers and hobbyists from around the world.
