If you’re interested in fishing but haven’t been able to decide where to go because you don’t know enough about the subject, here are some of the differences between fishing in the ocean and fishing in freshwater.
THE SEA HAS TIDES, THE LAKE DOES NOT.
Tidal changes are ideal for choosing different fishing areas and styles you want to practise. For example, a low tide will put you closer to bottom rocks for fishing with live bait or jigging. On the other hand, if the tide is rising, when it hits walls and underwater tides it creates an upward current effect from the seabed, bringing nutrients to the surface for trolling.
HOW TO DETERMINE FISHING AREAS
In lakes, there are fish concentration areas in the shade of trees, something you don’t see at sea.
At sea there are more birds, and when they fly in circles and dive, they indicate fishing areas. Likewise, at sea current lines are marked by organic debris or changes in colour, which tells us there are large numbers of species in those areas. In the ocean, most fishing happens along these current lines, which is where marine life is transported (very much like Finding Nemo).
SIZES
The size of catches varies quite a bit, with larger fish being found at sea. However, in recent years we have seen a flow of sea species into the lake, where for example there may be catches of jack in the lake; this, together with the types of gear used in the lake, will give the angler an unforgettable fight.

BAITS
Fishing in freshwater does not require special bait. Small fish, worms, and perhaps some river crabs could work. The type of bait for ocean fishing can be much more varied, from baitfish, anchovies, squid, pieces of fish, or you could even use live crabs. You can also use artificial lures (plugs, squid, among others) when trolling.
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE FOR EATING?
Marine fish are easier to debone, since they commonly have a larger bone structure than lake fish. This makes saltwater catches quicker to prepare.
Saltwater and freshwater fish have fairly similar nutritional value, although freshwater fish tend to have more calcium and fatty acids than marine fish. Freshwater fish offer a milder flavour on the palate, while their marine counterpart usually has a more seafood-like taste.
THE EXPERIENCE
Fishing on the lake is usually a more relaxing, quieter activity. Basically, we cast the lines and wait for the catches.
At sea, different fishing styles are tested such as jigging, popping, or trolling, and the boat moves around much more, making it a more exciting experience.
In short, fishing is fun; really, the biggest difference comes down to each person’s preference and style. And you, which do you prefer?
If you’re interested in freshwater fishing, book your boat for Lago Gatún. If you prefer saltwater fishing, you can choose the sport fishing tour with different destinations such as Bahía de Panamá, Isla Taboga, or any of the islands in the Las Perlas Archipelago.
