A fisherman's virtue is patience.
Among captains, we have a saying: “there’s nothing more impatient than an inexperienced angler” because they think a fish will bite from the very first second the lines hit the water (which does happen sometimes), but the reality is that, in general, you have to know how to wait. In short: PATIENCE!
Ask about everything
Don’t be shy about asking how to use the reels, lures, and everything else. A fishing charter captain is a fishing guide. It’s also an excellent opportunity for you, as an angler, to learn as much as possible. Every angler has personal techniques that will enrich your knowledge. Everyone will understand that, since it’s your first fishing trip, you’ll have questions, so ask without hesitation.
Comfort is good
Bring comfortable clothing, swimwear, a long-sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and dry clothes for afterward.
Do not touch and/or pull the lines while trolling
When trolling, the rods are placed in the rod holders and do their job on their own. They should only be touched when they have a fish hooked.
Make sure you’re in good hands
Check that the captain is aware of the day’s conditions, such as weather and tide. It’s also good for the captain to have a plan of action based on the day’s conditions. In addition, it’s always a good sign when the boat has professional equipment from recognized brands (such as a good sonar), and when the lures and hooks are in optimal condition. NO RUST.
