Did you know that fish have a preference for weather? Yes, some fish dislike rain and wind, so they will go into deeper waters, and you might not be able to catch them during the rainy season.
Other fish, however, love the rain, especially insect-eating fish in freshwater; during the rainy season, insects and other organic materials get knocked into the water, and so the fish will stay closer to the surface to catch them. When it rains at sea, birds tend to go find shelter and stop feeding, making the fish feel safe enough to eat and chase the bait to the surface.
Nice weather is not always best for fishing. On hot days, fewer insects are buzzing on top of the water because of the heat. And fish may prefer to go deeper into cooler waters when the sun is too hot. This is why it is advisable to go fishing early in the morning or through the evening during summer.
Fish cannot regulate their body temperature, so to stay at a healthy temperature, the fish will seek warmer or colder water according to their needs.
These are some of the reasons why it helps fishermen to know which type of fish is in season. In the Pacific, you can go fishing in several places. Departing from the city you can visit Taboga Island at eight nautical miles, Las Perlas Islands at 35 nautical miles (on the northern side), and Las Perlas Islands at 50+ nautical miles (on the southern side).
In Panama, you will find two distinct seasons and with them, different kinds of fish you may catch.
During the summer season (approximately from December to March) the main targeted species would be:
Coastal fishing: Various species of Grouper, Amberjack, Almacojack, various species of Snapper, Seabass (Corvina), Spanish Mackerel, and Roosterfish (Only available at Las Perlas Archipelago)
Offshore fishing: Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Tuna Bonito, Jack Crevalle, Wahoo, sailfish (Only available at Las Perlas Archipelago), and Black Marlin (Only available at the extended fishing trip / South of the Pearl Islands)
During the rainy season (approximately from April to November) the main targeted species would be:
Coastal fishing: Various species of Grouper, Amberjack, Almacojack, various species of Snapper, Seabass (Corvina), Spanish Mackerel, Roosterfish
Offshore fishing: Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore Tuna, Tuna Bonito, Jack Crevalle, African Pompano.
