The island of Chepillo is located in the Pacific Ocean of Panama. Therefore, with pride, we can say that these waves are the best ones in the region and bring up the most adventurous surfers that are looking for the perfect surge. And in this case, they found these waves with cero people, avoiding the famous crowd because of the remoteness of the place.
One of the qualities of this break is that it can only be accessed by sea, which means that during surf session, it is peculiar that you cross with another group of surfers besides the ones with you.
Ideally, to get to Chepillo it is better to go on our fastest boats, with a capacity to navigate almost 20 nautic miles from Panama City to Chepillo island in at least an hour.
The island has two breaks:
- One on the west face of the island is a little less consistent.
- The other is on the east face of Chepillo, which is the most famous and prominent.
The main break is a clean wave that doesn’t interfere with the open ocean. Waves burst on a rocky slab-like bottom, making it a break suitable for all levels, as it is much less dangerous as it has no reef or sensitive areas.
Keep in mind that the waves run to the right and has a long distance of approximately 200 meters. However, the tide can reach the three+ meters and endure good swells and a rocky point break. It has a steep but slow wall, several tubular sections, and very rarely has a closeout, so it is a long and clean ride.
Is it just for surfing?
The non surfers that go in a group are also welcomed. Besides surfing you can do other activities like fishing, snorkeling and whale watching (depending on the season). If you feel like it, you can also visit the local fishing village on the island of Chepillo.
It has the advice of our expert sea team to choose the best swell combined with the best tides, wave direction, and breeze direction to ensure the best possible experience. SURF UP!!!
