🐵 The Stars of the Show: Meet the Monkeys

Gatun Lake is home to several monkey species, each with its own personality. Here’s who you might meet:

Geoffroy’s Tamarin

  • Looks Like: Small, with a long tail and a cute white mustache.

  • Fun Fact: They’re incredibly acrobatic, leaping between branches with ease. Often seen in family groups.

White-Faced Capuchin

  • Looks Like: Black body, white face and chest (like a little old man).

  • Fun Fact: Considered one of the most intelligent New World monkeys. They use tools and are known to follow boats hoping for treats (don’t feed them!).

Mantled Howler Monkey

  • Looks Like: Large, black with long reddish-brown fur on their sides.

  • Fun Fact: Their calls can be heard up to 3 miles away through dense jungle. You’ll likely hear them before you see them.

Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey

  • Looks Like: Slender with very long limbs and a prehensile tail that acts like a fifth hand.

  • Fun Fact: They rarely come down from the treetops. Spotting one is a special treat!

Fun Facts About Gatun Lake & Its Monkeys

  • Man-Made Wonder: Gatun Lake is an artificial lake, created between 1907 and 1913 by damming the Chagres River to build the Panama Canal. When it was created, it was the largest man-made lake in the world.

  • Flooded Jungle: The lake is actually a flooded rainforest. You can still see dead tree stumps rising from the water, Remnants of the forest that stood here over 100 years ago.

  • Monkey Introductions: The monkeys you see today were not all originally from the area. Some were introduced to the islands in the lake (like Monkey Island) decades ago as part of research or sanctuary projects. Others, like the howlers, arrived naturally over time.

  • Ship Spotting: Gatun Lake is a major thoroughfare for the Panama Canal. You’ll share the water with massive container ships, tankers, and cruise ships, an incredible sight from a small boat!

  • Peacock Bass Paradise: The lake is world-famous for peacock bass fishing. These aggressive fighters were introduced years ago and have thrived in these waters.

Best Time to Visit

While this tour operates year-round, the dry season (December to April) offers the best conditions:

  • Sunny skies

  • Calmer waters

  • Monkeys more active and visible

If you visit during the green season (May to November), expect:

  • Lush, vibrant jungle

  • Occasional tropical showers (bring a light rain jacket!)

  • Fewer crowds on the lake

Rain never stops the monkeys—they just hide under leaves until it passes!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour suitable for children?

Absolutely! This is a fantastic family adventure. Kids love spotting monkeys, watching massive ships, and learning about the jungle from our guides. Life jackets are available for all ages, and the boats are safe and comfortable.

Will we definitely see monkeys?

While wildlife is wild and nothing is guaranteed, our guides know the lake intimately and have a very high success rate finding monkeys. Howler monkeys are almost always heard, and sightings are common. Tamarins and capuchins are frequent visitors near Monkey Island.

Do I need fishing experience?

Not at all. If you’re new to fishing, our guides will show you the basics and help you land your first peacock bass. If you’re an experienced angler, they’ll take you to the best spots.

Do we get off the boat on Monkey Island?

No, we do not go ashore on Monkey Island itself. This protects both you and the monkeys. You’ll get very close views from the boat while the monkeys go about their day in the trees.

Can we swim in Gatun Lake?

No, swimming in Gatun Lake is not recommended. Although it’s a popular spot for activities like sport fishing and safaris, designated recreational areas are limited, and swimming is prohibited in the water catchment area.

  • Water protection: Swimming is prohibited to prevent contamination of the drinking water source and ensure that the water treatment plants are functioning properly.
  • Physical safety: Large alligators (crocodiles) inhabit the lake, making swimming a safety risk.
  • Emergency releases: Due to heavy rains, the Panama Canal Authority releases water to manage lake levels, making the area potentially hazardous due to currents and changes in water level.

What happens if it rains?

The tour operates rain or shine! Tropical showers usually pass quickly, and the monkeys simply wait them out under the leaves. We’ll provide ponchos if needed, and the lake can feel even more magical in the rain.

Is lunch included?

Snacks, sandwiches, and drinks are included. Please let us know in advance if you have any allergies or intolerances.

How far in advance should I book?

During dry season (December–April), we recommend booking at least a few days in advance, as spots fill quickly. In rainy season, bookings are often available, but early booking guarantees your preferred date.

What should I bring?

We recommend:

  • Light clothing (quick-dry fabrics are great)
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Camera or phone for photos
  • Light rain jacket (especially May–November)
  • Cash for gratuities and optional add-ons

Can this tour be customized?

Yes! Whether you want to focus entirely on fishing, spend more time wildlife watching. Just ask when booking.
